Fabric bowls can be made in a variety of forms using pelmet vilene and bondaweb or a (more expensive) product called Fast2fuse which has glue already on both sides. They are quick and fun to assemble and make good presents. This workshop is easier than you may imagine; one or two bowls can be finished in a one-day Fabric Bowls Workshop.

In this Workshop, Magic Tiles are made using a system of cutting through multiple layers of fabric, following a template, then re-arranging the pieces to form new blocks. Using this method you can make wall hangings, cot/bed quilts etc. Magic tile blocks can be enhanced by the addition of fused appliqué, added before cutting the original fabric squares. The re-arranged pieces are assembled using narrow joining strips. The blocks can be finished in the workshop ready for adding sashing/borders later. If you work quickly, a quilt top can be completed in a day.

The Free Machine Quilting Workshop requires a sewing machine with feed-dogs which can be dropped and an extension table is advisable. My method of machine quilting also uses an embroidery ring - an ordinary wooden ring is ideal; you don't need to invest in anything expensive. You should already be comfortable using your machine before coming to the workshop as there isn't time during the session to ponder over how to drop the feed dogs, add the extension table etc. Free machining opens up new, more adventurous ways of enhancing quilts and can be a novel way to approach wholecloth quilting.

The Silk Painting Workshop introduces the process of using a gutta resist on Habotai silk, stretched onto a simple frame, and painted with translucent silk paints. The lustrous beauty of silk thus enhanced produces a lovely textile which can then be used for quilting; incorporated into a garment or framed to hang on a wall. Silk painting can become an obsession,so perhaps this workshop should come with a health warning!

During the Accurate Curved Piecing Workshop you will draw a small panel incorporating curved lines, produce templates, add ¼" seam allowance and assemble the panel during the workshop. This accurate method, once understood, can be applied in many quilting situations and gives more freedom in the types of blocks and piecing you can undertake. Curves add more flow to a quilt top and confidence in curved piecing can move you on to a new level of design and accuracy.

At the Free-cut Curves and Piecing Workshop rulers and accurate piecing go out of the window and you throw yourself into free cutting, narrow seams and a whole new approach to piecing patchwork. The addition of a few prairie points adds a little more fun to this lively workshop.

You will arrive at the Monoprinting, Frottage and Fabric Printing Workshop with plain fabric. By the end of the day you will have transformed your cloth by the addition of your own colours and textures producing a textile which can be used in a later project. Monoprinting is by definition a 'one-off' and therefore totally individual: Frottage (rubbings) adds texture to your fabric from a variety of sources which become more diverse if the weather is good, and simple fabric printing with lino or potatoes can add a repeat element. The results can be surprisingly sophisticated. A number of media will be required for this workshop.

Traditional Trapunto has existed for a very long time and has probably found its zenith in the stunning French version known as Boutis. In the morning of this workshop you will work a sample of traditional Trapunto similar to the one in the image. During the afternoon, however, there will be a very different and more contemporary approach to Trapunto. You will use coloured wools, sheer fabrics and other materials to produce a two sided translucent hanging which takes the art of Trapunto to a different level. I find it important to understand a tradition before taking the roots of its method and applying this to a more contemporary approach.

In the Multi Layered Reverse Applique Workshop you will not be producing a traditional 'mola' with lots of hand turned reverse appliqué but will learn a modern machine stitched version. It will still have a number of layers and different fabrics but the dedication required to needle turn each layer and slip stitch in place will not be needed. If you just breathed a sigh of relief, this workshop is probably one you'll enjoy. If your sewing machine has lots of decorative stitches you can employ them to the full, enhancing the reverse applique cut aways. The only hand work will be cutting away sections of top layer with small sharp scissors and adding beads for further embellishment.

Traditional Flying Geese are regimented, regular and can be made in multiples. To make the rather less disciplined Wandering Flying Geese I use foundation piecing and the result is more free flowing. Both Traditional and Wandering Flying Geese can enhance borders or appear meandering gaily across the centre of a quilt.
